New blood ketone monitoring leaflet and animation available from a DSN Forum and Neon Diagnostics collaboration

The leaflet and animation - and their contents – have been created by the DSN Forum and Neon Diagnostics. The DSN Forum has received funding for the production of these educational material from Neon Diagnostics.

The DSN Forum and Neon Diagnostics have collaborated to create a leaflet and animation on Blood Ketone Monitoring in Clinical Practice, offering practical support for healthcare professionals using the Neon GK+ meter.

The leaflet explores why blood ketone monitoring matters in clinical care and when testing should be considered. It covers type 1 diabetes, ketosis-prone type 2 diabetes and people taking SGLT2 inhibitors, including situations where diabetic ketoacidosis may occur without a markedly raised blood glucose level.

Healthcare professionals will also find guidance on testing technique, a reference table for interpreting blood ketone results, and information on sick day rules and meter quality assurance. The resource is designed to help teams recognise raised ketones, respond to results and document testing as part of routine care.

Alongside the leaflet, a step-by-step animation walks viewers through the testing process using the Neon GK+ meter. It shows how to prepare for the test, apply a blood sample and read the result, providing a visual guide that can be used alongside the written resource.

Together, the leaflet and animation offer accessible learning materials for diabetes professionals working in inpatient and community settings. They provide a useful refresher for experienced staff and a starting point for those building confidence in blood ketone monitoring, alongside local protocols and clinical judgement.
